NATO has officially released a strategic list of 12 defence-critical raw materials, and beryllium proudly stands among them.
This recognition underscores beryllium’s vital role in advanced defence technologies and highlights the critical importance of securing its supply chain for national and international security.
The list, published in December 2024, is a milestone in NATO’s ongoing efforts to fortify its supply chains against disruptions that could threaten operational readiness and technological superiority.
The selection of beryllium reflects its unique properties as pure metal, including exceptional stiffness, lightweight strength, and excellent thermal stability. Mechanical strength and electrical conductivity, make beryllium-copper alloys indispensable in the manufacturing of advanced military systems.
Beryllium is a crucial component in aerospace and defence applications, from satellite systems to high-performance aircraft. Its ability to improve structural integrity while reducing weight, enhances the agility and efficiency of critical defence technologies.
Being an excellent neutron reflector, beryllium becomes vital in nuclear weapon systems and other specialised defence technologies.
As NATO moves forward with its roadmap to secure raw materials, the beryllium industry stands ready to play a pivotal role in meeting defence needs. Ensuring a steady, resilient supply of beryllium will be essential to maintaining NATO’s technological edge and the overall security of its members.
